We Are A’Nuche

A’Nuche is a nonprofit organization rooted in the White Mesa Community and dedicated to preserving Anikanuchu Ute language, culture, identity, and ancestral lands.

A PEOPLE ROOTED IN WHITE MESA, UTAH

LAND

Protecting the lands and ecosystems that sustain the community.

CULTURE

Keeping traditions, stories, knowledge, and practices alive.

LANGUAGE

Preserving the Ute language and passing it to future generations.

THIS IS OUR HOME

For thousands of years, the Anikanuche have lived in relationship with these lands. Despite displacement, cultural disruption, and generations of silence, our people have endured.

Our language, our stories, and our connection to the land remain.

100 YEARS OF SILENCE

Our silence was due to violence.

Our neighbors never went to jail for murder, for kidnapping, for theft of land and possessions, and abduction of children. Even though US laws were in place. While the perpetrators were alive, Utes were warned to NEVER speak of what happened so that the lies would remain standing. Ute People began speaking the truth after 100 years, in 2023 and we intend to stand strong in knowing who we are and telling the truth for how we lost Bears Ears and so much on the day we were all kidnapped by the Town of Blanding.
NOW WE BEGIN TO HEAL
TELL THE STORIES

Share the history and experiences of the Anikanuche people.

SPEAK THE LANGUAGE

Reconnect younger generations with the Ute language.

PRACTICE OUR CULTURE

Keep traditions and cultural knowledge alive.

SHARE OUR CULTURE

Build understanding between the Ute community and its neighbors.

THE LAND IS NOT A RESOURCE. IT IS OUR RELATIVE.

The plants and animals provide us with food, clothing, medicine, and everything we need to live. We are not separate from the ecosystem—we are part of it. For the Anikanuche, caring for the land is not a privilege or a choice. It is a responsibility passed from one generation to the next.
THE STORY ISN'T OVER

The lands of the Anikanuche continue to face threats from industrial development, including the White Mesa Mill and proposed mining of rare earth minerals.
We believe protecting these lands means protecting our culture, our relatives, and the generations yet to come.

THE FUTURE BEGINS WITH OUR YOUTH
A’Nuche works to educate the youth and community of White Mesa about their culture, language, and traditional approaches to land stewardship—strengthening identity and creating a path toward healing.
A PLACE WHERE THE ANIKANUCHU CAN LIVE IN HARMONY WITH THE EARTH AND SHARE WHO THEY ARE.
